This bill would expand the prior three award pilot program of increasing the purchase and consumption of California-grown fresh fruits and vegetables to enable more authorized retailers to provide supplemental benefits to CalFresh recipients who purchase fresh fruits and vegetables through the Electronic Benefit System (EBT). Eating food is an essential need for the human body and is also a basic human right. Pope Francis’ message to participants of the World Food Forum was the call, “not simply to feed the other, but to give ourselves in service to others in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity that must inspire relations between individuals and between peoples.”
