AB 55 (Bonta) Ease Red Tape for Birth Centers – Support

Since 2007, the use of licensed midwives has increased more than 3.5 times, now assisting in over 4,300 births annually. Births in freestanding birth centers have grown at the same rate while physician-attended births have declined by 33%. Midwifery care and birth center options play a critical role in supporting low-risk pregnancies and reducing the risk of cesarean sections by 20%. Despite their proven benefits, burdensome regulations make it difficult for birth centers to operate and serve their communities. Regulatory reform is a crucial step in preserving this essential, traditional form of maternal healthcare. Lawmakers need to ensure parity for the choices of pregnant and parenting women as they pursue motherhood.
