AB 1498 will establish a California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) minimum amount of at least $300 for low wage earners. CALEITC is one of California’s best tools to prevent poverty. This is a refundable credit that goes towards families earning $30,000 or less in a given tax year, and unlike the federal EITC, allows individuals with ITINs to qualify. This is one of the state’s most effective program and unfortunately not all recipients receive a meaningful tax credit amount. This bill will prioritize the needs of historically disenfranchised and seek pathways toward equitable distribution of financial resources for our most vulnerable communities.
