The California Conference of Catholic Bishops released the following statement regarding the appointment of Cardinal Robert McElroy as Archbishop of Washington, D.C.:
“The Catholic bishops of California congratulate our brother bishop, Cardinal Robert McElroy, of the Diocese of San Diego, on his appointment as Archbishop of Washington, D.C.
Cardinal McElroy is known for his pastoral care for the Church in San Diego. The Diocese of San Diego actively ministers to large numbers of migrants through the exemplary work of their Catholic Charities. Cardinal McElroy’s commitment to environmental justice is demonstrated in his numerous energy and ecology programs throughout the diocese. He has shown a commitment, in his diocese and beyond, to synodality in the Church, bringing together under-represented voices seeking to build unity.
Cardinal McElroy’s background in political science and public policy has allowed him to bring wise counsel to the work of the California Catholic Conference. As president of the CCC during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cardinal McElroy helped safely shepherd our Catholic schools to ensure students remained successful despite the learning challenges during that time. He was also instrumental in reorganizing the CCC’s focus on policies supporting women, children, and families following the Dobbs decision from the Supreme Court.
“We look forward to the leadership of Cardinal McElroy in our nation’s capital and invite all California Catholics to join us in praying for him as he takes on a new role in the Church in the United States.”
