Habemus Papem! We have a Pope!
Please join the CCC in giving thanks and praise and praying for our newly elected pope, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, who has taken the name Leo XIV.
Born in Chicago and the first American pope, Pope Leo was most recently Prefect of the Discastery of Bishops. Pope Leo holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Peru, where he also served as Archbishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo.
The announcement was made at 10:13am PST.
May the Lord grant Pope Leo XIV wisdom, courage, and compassion, and light his path as he shepherds our Holy Catholic Church.
Prayer for Pope Leo XIV
Everloving God,
We thank You for guiding the Church and for the gift of our new Holy Father.
With humility and trust, we lift him up to You in prayer.
Fill his heart with the fire of the Holy Spirit,
That he may lead Your people with truth, love, and mercy.
Strengthen him in times of trial,
And surround him with faithful servants and wise counsel.
May he be a shepherd after Your own heart—
Guiding Your Church in unity,
Upholding the dignity of every person,
And bearing joyful witness to the Gospel in a world in need.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
