SB 309: Correctional facilities: religious accommodations

This bill will create a statewide policy on religious clothing, grooming, and headwear in state and local correctional and detention facilities. Religious Liberty has two components: freedom to worship, and practice one’s faith, and freedom from governmental establishment of religion. Our rich Catholic Social Teaching informs us that religious freedom is the cornerstone of a society that promotes human dignity: it is a fundamental right, which follows on the duty of all people to seek the truth about God. SB 309 will benefit our brothers and sisters of different faiths as they seek to live out adherence to their religious beliefs while incarcerated. We support the practice of religious freedom and support accommodations regarding religious clothing, headwear, and grooming.
