Human Trafficking Is Modern-Day Slavery

on . Human Trafficking

By Most Reverend Rutilio del Riego
Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of San Bernardino

del-riego(En Español) Human trafficking is modern-day slavery—which actually exists here in America, even though 150 years ago we formally abolished slavery and involuntary servitude with the 13th amendment to the U.S. constitution. Today, human beings are trafficked for labor, organ harvesting and sexual exploitation. However, most cases of human trafficking involve forced prostitution of girls and young women. On average, a girl is 12 to 14 years old when she is first trafficked, and she is often an immigrant, a runaway and/or a victim of sexual abuse. Those caught up in this despicable practice suffer alienation, disease, torture and even death. It is, quite obviously, a severe violation of our belief as Roman Catholics in the dignity of every human person. We are called to come to the aide of the poor and vulnerable, and to stop others who seek to exploit them.

The Hidden Scourge of Human Trafficking

on . Human Trafficking

sadgirl2Human trafficking is an immense and complex problem that destroys lives right here in California as well as around the world.  Victims live in the shadows often held against their wills in communal housing. They are people who are desperate to better their lives, feed their families, to escape the pain of their existence but are lured into something else. They often end up as modern-day slaves. Victims of human trafficking live and work in our communities but they’re hidden or blended in by their captors. They are living in fearful, disadvantaged hostile situations.

Human trafficking is defined as someone who performs labor or commercial sex through force, fraud or coercion. According to the U.S. Department of Justice the majority of human trafficking is classified as sex trafficking (about 80 percent ), labor trafficking (10 percent) and the remainder miscellaneous trafficking. California is among the most vulnerable states for human trafficking and Los Angeles is one of the top three points of entry for victims.
