Insights: Act Now as Governor Newsom Decides Fates of Bills; Respect Life Month

Governor Newsome Could Sign or Veto These Bills at Any Time – Act Now on These Alerts

Governor Newsom is now one week into his signing period.  He has until midnight on October 12 to act on several important bills that could have far-reaching effects on Californians.

The most noteworthy and dangerous is SB 24.  Thank you to all who responded to our action alerts asking him to veto the bill that will require health centers at state colleges and universities to offer abortion medication.  He has not acted on SB 24 yet, so there is still time to send the action alert.  SB 922, which we strongly oppose, will allow women to sell their eggs for research purposes.  A similar bill was vetoed by Governor Brown last year.

There are other bills supported by the California Catholic Conference that will bring meals for preschool children as well as improve security for places of worship against hate crimes, to name a few.

Please use the links below to quickly send letters to Governor Newsom to let him know you support or oppose these important bills.

October is Respect Life Month

Each October, the Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. During October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life.

“This year’s theme, Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life, is particularly suited for the times in which we live,” said Kansas City Archbishop and Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities Joseph F. Naumann. “The attacks against human life seem to grow more numerous and callous by the day. Despite these challenges, we know that Christ has conquered sin and death once and for all. Through our Christian hope in the Resurrection, we are given the grace to persevere in faith. Our sacrifices on behalf of the Gospel of Life can contribute to the redemption of this current culture of death.”

Respect Life Month Resources

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops provides resources to help parishes, schools, families, ministries, and individual Catholics share the Gospel of Life during Respect Life Month and throughout the year. To help you get started, there are many materials available, in both English and Spanish, including sample timelines, homily helps, announcements, activities, and more. Click here for USCCB toolkit. You are encouraged to adapt these resources as needed to fit your specific parish, school, or ministry.

The annual Respect Life Month Toolkit from Catholic Mobilizing Network also offers dynamic, easy-to-use resources designed to assist Catholic parishes, dioceses, and individuals as they advocate for a culture of life and an end to capital punishment. The kit includes prayer service templates, parish bulletin articles, social media resources, and more.
