The following comment comes from Ned Dolejsi, Executive Director of the California Catholic Conference, in response to the temporary stay of Judge Walker’s Prop 8 ruling issued by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
"We are gratified that the three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals responded positively to the Protect Marriage group’s well reasoned brief asking for an emergency stay of Judge Walker’s ruling that traditional marriage was an irrational and discriminatory artifact imposed by the biased electorate of California. Proposition 8—the constitutional amendment which simply states that only marriage between a man and a woman is recognized or valid in California—remains in place for the time being.

Following Federal Court Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling on Proposition 8, Ned Dolejsi, Executive Director of the California Catholic Conference, has issued a statement (download in English or Spanish) expressing disappointment in the Judge's decision and reaffirming marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, reflects on the decision in his blog (here). Other reaction include those from Cardinal Francis George, President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, (here) and ProtectMarriage.com (here).
More on the history of Prop 8 can be found in the Family Life section of our website or visit Marriage: A Special Section on the Sacrament for information on marriage preparation, prayers and blessings, catechetical resources and more. |

Commentary by Carol Hogan Director of Pastoral Projects and Communication
Those who support traditional marriage take the long view. They believe that we are indebted to those who preceded us-those who, through trial and error and received wisdom, crafted enduring institutions necessary for an ordered society. And they believe that we are charged with preserving those institutions for future generations.
Those who support "same-sex marriage" take the particular view-often called the post-modern view. They hold history as interesting but not definitive in current times. Novelty intrigues them, arguments for equality and fairness energize them and "progress" enamors them.
Of course, both sides can present arguments-some powerful, some petulant.
I was privileged to attend the closing argument in Perry v. Schwarzenegger case which was held on the 17th floor of the federal Courthouse in San Francisco. The arguments concluded the trial resulting from the lawsuit filed by four plaintiffs claiming that Proposition 8, which added the traditional definition of marriage to California's constitution, is a violation of the U.S. Constitution's equal protection guarantee.

WASHINGTON -- En Español -- The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) launched this week www.PorTuMatrimonio.org, a new Web site in Spanish for couples. The Website, completely in Spanish, is the Hispanic version of the popular www.ForYourMarriage.org, although it is not a translation of it, said Alejandro Aguilera-Titus director for Hispanic Affairs of the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church and coordinator of the project. The initiative responds to the bishops’ current priorities on marriage and cultural diversity with special emphasis on Hispanics.
“PorTuMatrimonio.org is a space to inspire, help and urge Spanish-speaking couples to live more fully their marriage relationship,” Aguilera-Titus said. “The idea is to help them be happy couples, committed to their vocation.”
Advice, stories, testimonials and other resources to liven up the daily life of couples are found on the site along with valuable information about common challenges for couples and how to overcome them in healthy and respectful ways.

The following statement is from Andy Pugno, general counsel for ProtectMarriage.com:
San Francisco, CA -- "Today concluded the presentation of evidence in the federal trial, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, challenging Prop 8's definition of marriage as only between a man and a woman. Our Prop 8 Legal Defense Team did a remarkable job in defending the will of over 7 million California voters who passed it into law.
"What may be lost in all the sensationalism of the past two and a half weeks of trial is that the burden of proof to invalidate Prop 8 lies squarely with the plaintiffs. They cannot win unless they prove that the voters were "irrational" when they chose to preserve the traditional definition of marriage in our state. Contrary to their public relations claims, the outcome of this case does not depend on whether the Prop 8 sponsors can prove that homosexual marriage will harm traditional marriage. The controlling legal issue is not whether homosexual marriage is good or bad, but rather whether the people have the right to decide what is best. The plaintiffs simply did not carry that burden.
