Bishops’ Conference Launches Por Tu Matrimonio, A Spanish Website On Marriage For Couples PDF Print E-mail

coupleWASHINGTON -- En Español -- The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) launched this week www.PorTuMatrimonio.org, a new Web site in Spanish for couples. The Website, completely in Spanish, is the Hispanic version of the popular www.ForYourMarriage.org, although it is not a translation of it, said Alejandro Aguilera-Titus director for Hispanic Affairs of the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church and coordinator of the project. The initiative responds to the bishops’ current priorities on marriage and cultural diversity with special emphasis on Hispanics.

PorTuMatrimonio.org is a space to inspire, help and urge Spanish-speaking couples to live more fully their marriage relationship,” Aguilera-Titus said. “The idea is to help them be happy couples, committed to their vocation.”

Advice, stories, testimonials and other resources to liven up the daily life of couples are found on the site along with valuable information about common challenges for couples and how to overcome them in healthy and respectful ways.

Presentation of Evidence Concludes in Perry v Schwarzenegger PDF Print E-mail

justiceThe following statement is from Andy Pugno, general counsel for ProtectMarriage.com:

San Francisco, CA -- "Today concluded the presentation of evidence in the federal trial, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, challenging Prop 8's definition of marriage as only between a man and a woman. Our Prop 8 Legal Defense Team did a remarkable job in defending the will of over 7 million California voters who passed it into law.

"What may be lost in all the sensationalism of the past two and a half weeks of trial is that the burden of proof to invalidate Prop 8 lies squarely with the plaintiffs. They cannot win unless they prove that the voters were "irrational" when they chose to preserve the traditional definition of marriage in our state. Contrary to their public relations claims, the outcome of this case does not depend on whether the Prop 8 sponsors can prove that homosexual marriage will harm traditional marriage. The controlling legal issue is not whether homosexual marriage is good or bad, but rather whether the people have the right to decide what is best. The plaintiffs simply did not carry that burden.

US Bishops Applaud Maine Vote PDF Print E-mail
Marriage unique institution between one man, one woman, say bishops.  Defense of marriage does not allow ‘unjust discrimination' against homosexual persons. Marriage must be strengthened, not redefined

WASHINGTON-The U.S. bishops applauded the decision of voters in Maine to repeal a state law allowing same-sex "marriage." The position of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) was stated by Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, chairman of the Bishops' Ad Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage.

Court Grants Intervenor Status to Prop 8 Proponents PDF Print E-mail
SACRAMENTO - The official proponents of Proposition 8, last November's successful initiative to restore marriage as being between a man and a woman in the California Constitution, were granted intervenor status by the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California in a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of Prop. 8.

The plaintiffs filed a lawsuit, Perry v Schwarzenegger in May, challenging Prop. 8 on the basis that it violates the United States Constitution. They subsequently filed a motion for a preliminary injunction, which would suspend Prop. 8 and allow same-sex couples to resume obtaining marriage licenses while Perry v Schwarzenegger wound its way through the court system. A hearing on whether to issue the preliminary injunction is scheduled for July 2, 2009. In the ruling granting intervenor status to the official Proposition 8 proponents, the Court took notice of the fact that the California Attorney General was not defending the state's laws as contemplated in the California Constitution.

Bishops Applaud California Supreme Court Validation of Prop 8 PDF Print E-mail

judicialThe Catholic bishops of California have released the following statement in response to the ruling by the California Supreme Court in the Proposition 8 case:

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice Ron George, said: “We conclude that Proposition 8 constitutes a permissible constitutional amendment…We further conclude that…the marriages of same-sex couples performed prior to the effective date of Proposition 8 remain valid.”

Speaking for the California Catholic Conference of Bishops, the Most Reverend Stephen E. Blaire, said:

“We laud the California Supreme Court’s confirmation of Proposition 8 which preserves the traditional understanding of marriage in the state’s constitution.  We, however, are disappointed that the same Court validated the interim same-sex ‘marriages.’
